- Hyundai Electric Rescale ScaleX Platform to build a large, high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure based on AWS to increase business capacity
- Improve work efficiency through dramatically shortening design and analysis work time ... 20% cost savings per year compared to on premise
- Strengthening competitiveness of new products through cost reduction and work efficiency improvement and laying foundation for growth as a next generation energy solution company
June 21, 2019 -- Amazon Web Services (AWS) made an announcement that Hyundai Electric and EnergySystem (Hyundai Electric), a leading South Korean power infrastructure producer, will introduce AWS to build high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and make digital innovations based on it.
Hyundai Electronics has formed an HPC environment based on AWS through its scaleX platform by Rescale, AWS's AWS partner (AWS Partner Network) partner and global cloud HPC platform provider. It also introduced AWS throughout its infrastructures such as its IoT solution called 'INTEGRICT' that is used for collecting and analyzing data generated from products and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) that performs product simulations. Rescale Scalex of the Heat Fluid Analysis, and Analysis of Structural Analysis and Vibration Analysis electromagnetic simulations are being used to work in various fields.
Hyundai Electronics has established a new HPC environment by introducing AWS and Rescale to respond to changes in the market environment and increase system agility and scalability. By doing so, the company plans to speed up the development of new products and further become an energy solution company based on innovative technologies.
Based on the new HPC infrastructure, Hyundai Electronics has been able to speed up product design and analysis work. With the new 3D model-based simulation system, it is possible to break away from the limitations experienced in the existing 2D model-based simulation work and to provide an overall interpretation that was not possible in the 2D environment.
HPC environments running on AWS and Rescale also enable large-scale simulation and interpretation tasks to be performed easily, greatly reducing product development time and product development. In fact, it took about one month to perform the analysis task in the existing 32-core system, but it shortened it to 6 hours. In addition, it was not possible to analyze more than 128 cores in the past, but it was possible to increase operational efficiency by executing several analyzes concurrently requiring more than 512 cores. Hyundai Electric expects that this cloud environment will save about 20% a year in costs such as license costs, maintenance management costs, and capital investment costs for analytical workstations when HPC facilities are directly installed.
Kim Sung-rak, CTO(vice president of Hyundai Electric Co.,) said, "There is fierce competition in the domestic and overseas energy business to develop and launch stable and efficient solutions. As an industry leader, Hyundai Electronics has chosen AWS and Rescale to build a highly resilient and agile HPC infrastructure. It judged that operating a new system in the cloud rather than expanding on-premise HPC is reasonable in terms of economy, convenience and cost efficiency. Rescale is an integrated interface that already supports a variety of CAE software that we use and can move current workloads to AWS very quickly. We also expect to expand our product portfolio and preempt the energy solution market through the advanced services of AWS," he said.
"We are pleased that Hyundai Electronics has successfully built the HPC infrastructure on top of AWS and Rescale," said Chang Jung-wook, Country Manager of AWS Korea. "In fact, leaders in the manufacturing industry are choosing AWS to take advantage of the highest performance, highest availability, maximum scalability, and unique services offered by AWS to advance their business in the cloud. AWS will continue to support Hyundai Electronics to achieve digital innovation in the power appliance and energy solution industries, leading the global competition and innovating faster,"
